Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure that removes fat from certain areas of the body. Review the following frequently asked questions to learn more about the liposuction procedure.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction are near their ideal body weight, have good skin elasticity, are in good general health, and have specific areas on their bodies where the fat has not responded to diet and exercise. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon can review your goals and needs to help determine if liposuction is the right treatment option for you.

Is liposuction a good weight loss method?

No. Liposuction is not for weight loss. The procedure is intended to help eliminate pockets of fat that do not respond to normal weight loss methods, such as diet and exercise, to achieve a more defined appearance and an improved body contour.

How long does the surgery usually take, and where is the procedure performed?

Liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in a surgeon's office or in a hospital setting. The procedure typically takes a few hours to complete, depending on the area being treated. If your treatment is being combined with another procedure, such as breast augmentation, you will be in surgery for a longer period of time.

Will there be visible scarring?

Liposuction incisions are very small and are not very noticeable. Talk to your doctor about what kind of scarring you can expect from your particular procedure.

How long after surgery before I can see the results?

Full results of liposuction surgery may not be visible for up to six months as your body heals and swelling dissipates.
