A facelift is a surgical procedure that helps reduce the visible signs of aging in the face and neck to create a younger appearance. The facelift is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures and is performed on both men and women. Review the following frequently asked questions to learn more about this surgical procedure.

Who is a candidate?

Candidates for facelift surgery are individuals who are concerned about facial aging, have good skin elasticity, have realistic expectations, and who are generally healthy. Most facelift patients are between the ages of 40 and 70.

How is the procedure performed?

In most cases the facelift is completed as outpatient surgery at a hospital or at the surgeon's medical facility. After anesthesia is administered, the plastic surgeon will make discreet incisions in order to gain access to the underlying facial structures. The surgeon will remove excess fat, tighten muscles, and reposition the skin.  When the procedure is complete, the patient may return home. The patient will not be able to drive and should be accompanied by someone who can assist them for the remainder of the day.

What is recovery like?

After the facelift surgery, most patients will experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort. Most patients are able to return to work and other daily activities between 10 to 14 days after their procedure.

What results can I expect?

Advancements in surgical techniques have improved the results that can be achieved with facelift surgery. Instead of simply pulling the outer skin tight, the surgeon also carefully adjusts the muscles and tissues under the skin to create a much more natural and youthful appearance that has lasting results. The procedure is often combined with other treatments, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or blepharoplasty, for even more dramatic results.
