Ear Surgery - San Antonio, Texas

Smiling man in a t-shirtFor most people, the ears are far from the most prominent feature of the face, let alone the body. However, an individual with oversized or protruding ears may be incredibly self-conscious about his or her appearance. While it may be possible to conceal the ears beneath long hair for a time, it cannot erase the perceived stigma or self-consciousness a person may feel. Fortunately, there is a solution!

Ear surgery, technically referred to as otoplasty, at the San Antonio practice of Accent Plastic Surgery, P.A., is a potentially ideal procedure for anyone who is dissatisfied with the appearance of his or her ears. During a personal consultation, Dr. Sheryl Pilcher will evaluate your case, outline potential treatment options, and determine whether you are indeed a candidate for ear surgery.

Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to change the appearance of the outer ear. The ears can be reduced, reshaped, or even brought closer to the head, referred to as "ear pinning." The external ear, known as the pinna, is made of cartilage covered with skin. With such easy access to the underlying structures in need of reshaping, ear surgery is relatively simple, though more substantial cosmetic deformities will require a more involved treatment. The entire procedure is usually completed within 1 to 3 hours, depending on the case. Ear surgery at our San Antonio practice is an outpatient procedure, with recovery at home taking an average of five to seven days.

Ear surgery begins, like most procedures, with anesthesia. At Accent Plastic Surgery, P.A., ear surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's wishes and the scope of their surgery. Once the patient has been anesthetized, Dr. Pilcher makes an incision behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear and head conjoin. Through this incision, cartilage and skin are removed to achieve the desired shape and structure. At this point, sutures may be used to pin the cartilage of the ear back permanently, bringing the ear closer to the head. At the close of the procedure, the incisions are closed using dissolvable sutures and covered with a dressing to protect the ear during recovery.
