Neck Lift Surgery Recovery
By Sheryl Pilcher on September 14, 2012
One of the best ways to enhance your overall appearance is to consider neck lift surgery. A neck lift is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the underside of the chin and from the neck area itself. It's important that you meet with a San Antonio plastic surgeon so you can find out if the surgery is right for you. We'd like to take a brief moment right now to look at the basics of neck lift surgery and what to expect from the recovery process.
About Neck Lift Surgery
Neck lift surgery is a facial rejuvenation procedure for the lower portion of the face. During a neck lift, the excess fat and skin of the neck area is removed to improve the overall contour of the lower face area and the neck area. A cosmetic surgeon in San Antonio will determine the best way for the neck lift to be performed.
Candidates for Neck Lift Surgery
The best candidates for neck lift surgery are people who have loose skin around the neckline or excess fat and flab around the neckline. Many of these patients have issues with the neckline due to advanced age or major weight loss.
The Neck Lift Surgery Procedure
The neck lift surgery procedure will usually be performed under general anesthetic. Incisions are made along the bottom portion of the ears and just under the chin. Through these incisions, liposuction will be used to remove fat deposits and excess skin will be removed. The remaining skin is then pulled tighter and sutured in place.
What to Expect After Neck Lift Surgery
Following neck lift surgery, it's important for patients to get a lot of rest and try not to make any sudden turns or twists of the head. Doing so may reopen surgical incisions or affect the healing of these incisions. We advise patients to not engage in any strenuous physical activities and instead focus on being relaxed and comfortable. This is especially true of heavy lifting and any actions that put pressure or strain on parts of the face.
Discomfort, swelling, and redness in the lower face and neckline is common. It's important that patients inform us of any undue pain or discomfort so that this can be addressed as soon as possible.
Looking Ahead to Recovery
You will return to our practice a few days after neck lift surgery in order for us to monitor the progress of your recovery. In the weeks ahead, you'll be able to slowly return to normal activities. We strongly advise against smoking or alcohol consumption a few weeks before the surgery and for several weeks after the surgery as this can affect your recovery times.
If you undergo other San Antonio facial plastic surgery procedures in addition to your neck lift, the recovery time can be affected. In general, patients should be fully recovered from a neck lift after a few weeks, able to use full range of motion in the neck and head area.
