Recovering from Eyelid Surgery
By Sheryl Pilcher on December 09, 2014
Most people expect that their physical features will begin to change as they age. However, many are surprised by how early this actually happens. In most cases, the area around the eyes is the first to show signs of aging, with some patients developing wrinkles, creases, saggy upper and/or lower eyelid skin, and/or puffy bags as early as their 30s. Facial plastic surgery can restore a more youthful appearance by addressing the skin around the eyes. Dr. Sheryl Pilcher helps patients prepare for eyelid surgery by informing them of what to expect not only during treatment, but also after, during the ever-important recovery period.
How Lengthy Is Eyelid Surgery Recovery?
In general, eyelid surgery recovery is considered fairly short. However, in terms of recovery time, the term “short” is relative. Patients should not expect that they will be up and ready to return to work or any other activities the day after surgery. We advise our San Antonio patients that eyelid surgery recovery will last, on average, about two weeks. While some bruising and swelling may persist for longer than two weeks, most of the side effects resolve significantly enough that patients feel comfortable enough to resume their usual daily activities within seven to 10 days after surgery.
Eyelid Surgery Side Effects
Patients should be prepared to experience some side effects following their procedure. Although not all patients will experience every side effect of surgery, most will experience one or more of the following:
- Bruising and swelling around the eyes
- Difficulty opening and closing the eyes completely as a result of swelling
- Temporary changes in vision
Again, while bruising and swelling may take a couple of weeks to dissipate, most other side effects last no more than a week, and are significantly improved within several days after surgery. The use of cold compresses can be helpful in reducing swelling (which will also aid in the improvement of many other side effects). While patients will likely want plenty of rest during recovery, it is also important to keep the head slightly elevated at all times. By keeping the head propped up while resting or sleeping, swelling will reduce more quickly.
Patients should avoid strenuous activity or exercise for a few weeks after surgery. However, patients should start taking walks the day after surgery. Walking will keep circulation moving and encourage healing.
As swelling and bruising go down, patients can begin to enjoy the results of eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery can eliminate puffy bags, lift droopy eyelid skin, and give the eyes a wider, more alert, and refreshed appearance. This procedure can take several years off a person’s appearance and may even improve vision.
