Refresh your Appearance and Eliminate Under Eye Circles with Lower Eyelid Surgery
By Sheryl Pilcher on February 09, 2015
Aging is a natural part of life that comes with a number of benefits, including the wisdom that is often gained through a lifetime of experiences. Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages of aging, one of the biggest being the effect that aging can have on a person’s physical appearance. While the entire body is likely to change over time, the face, and the eye area in particular, are usually the first to show the side effects of aging. As early as the 30s, many patients begin to see loose skin, fine lines, and puffiness develop around the eyes. Eyelid surgery can smooth out the skin around the eyes to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Dr. Sheryl Pilcher offers her San Antonio patients lower eyelid surgery for under eye circles, one of the most common complaints of our patients. Lower eyelid surgery can eliminate these circles and heavy under eye “bags” so that our patients can look alert and youthful instead of aged, tired, and worn down.
Eyelid surgery is a potential option for any patient who is dissatisfied with the appearance of the skin around their eyes and is healthy enough to undergo surgery. Eyelid surgery is typically one of the first plastic surgery procedures a patient will undergo and is often performed in a patient’s late 30s or early 40s, although it can be performed at virtually any age. Eyelid surgery may involve correction of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery is concentrated on the area of skin that is just below the eyes. Candidates for lower eyelid surgery are those with the following concerns:
- Puffiness beneath the eyes
- Under eye circles
- Heavy bags of skin beneath the lower eyelids
- Drooping lower eyelids
- Lines, wrinkles, or creases in the skin around the lower eyelids
Puffy, loose skin, and under eye circle are caused by three primary imperfections: a collection of fat cells, a loss of skin elasticity, and a retention of water. Lower eyelid surgery makes alterations that address these concerns and leaves patients with smoother, tighter skin that looks more alert and youthful. To begin this process, Dr. Pilcher will make a small incision in the natural crease of the lower eyelid (so that the scar is barely visible once it has healed). Through this incision, Dr. Pilcher will be able to remove the fat deposits that have collected beneath the lower eyelids. The under eye skin will then be redraped to create a smoother, firmer appearance, and any excess skin will be removed before closing the surgical incision. After a brief recovery period (typically seven to ten days), patients will notice a dramatic appearance in the eyes and overall facial features. Once under eye circles and bags have been eliminated, patients find that they look more alert and awake, as well as several years younger.
