Cosmetic Treatments for the Arms
By Sheryl Pilcher on June 06, 2015
At Accent Plastic Surgery, we offer cosmetic treatments that can address all areas of the body. This is because we know that each patient is unique and has their own areas of imperfection that they’d like to improve. For many of the patients we see, the upper arms are an area of concern. The arms may retain excess fat and tissue, which, combined with a loss of skin elasticity, can make the arms look loose and untoned. Liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat to give the arms a sleeker appearance, but this is just one cosmetic treatment for the arms offered at our San Antonio practice. Dr. Sheryl Pilcher can also perform an arm lift to permanently remove excess skin from the upper arms. Dr. Pilcher can discuss patients’ specific needs and desires to determine which type of cosmetic arm treatment is appropriate for them.
Cosmetic Treatments for the Arms
While most people focus their idea of youth or beauty on the appearance of the face, there are those among us who have flabby underarm skin. Unfortunately, as the body ages, it tends to hold onto stubborn fat deposits and skin elasticity is lost, both of which contribute to the appearance of unfit arms. Dr. Pilcher understands that this can make patients feel self-conscious about their appearance, and can even make it difficult to find clothes that fit properly. Because of this, she offers two cosmetic treatments (liposuction and arm lift) to tighten and tone the arms to give them a more youthful and attractive appearance.
- Liposuction: Liposuction can be performed on the upper arms to eliminate excess deposits of fat. This procedure uses a series of small incisions that allow Dr. Pilcher to insert a cannula (a hollow surgical tube) that can break up and suction out these fatty deposits. The benefit of liposuction is that it can make the arms more slender and is not likely to leave any visible scars. However, liposuction does not address excess skin and is, therefore, more appropriate for patients who have good skin tone.
- Arm lift: An arm lift allows Dr. Pilcher to make more extensive alterations to the arms. During an arm lift procedure, an incision is made on the underside of the upper arm (typically extending between the arm pit and elbow). This incision allows Dr. Pilcher to remove excess skin and fat. The skin of the upper arm is then re-draped and the incision is closed. While a visible scar will remain, it can be easily hidden, and patients will benefit from a toning and tightening effect of the upper arms.
Both procedures have their own advantages and disadvantages to consider. What it will really come down to when it comes to choosing between liposuction and an arm lift is what the patients desires from the results of surgery and which technique is most likely to produce those results.
