Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift - Which Is Right for You?

By Sheryl Pilcher on September 05, 2015

Woman with full, shapely breastsMany women are unhappy with the appearance of their bust line. Whether a patient lacks volume, experiences unwanted sagging, or has lost shapeliness over time, there are many aesthetic problems that can compromise the appearance of the breasts. Breast surgery enhances the bust line by restoring volume, improving the position of the breasts, and giving women back that youthful perkiness. However, there are several different breast procedures to consider, and it is important to determine which is most likely to address each patient’s specific areas of concern. When it comes to breast augmentation vs. breast lift surgery at our San Antonio practice, Dr. Sheryl Pilcher is happy to help patients figure out which is right for them.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures around the world. This surgery addresses a problem that is commonly shared among women: a lack of volume in the breasts. While some women are born with naturally small breasts, others may have experienced a loss of volume after losing significant amounts of weight or after going through pregnancy. In either case, breast augmentation allows Dr. Pilcher to place implants to increase bust size.

Breast augmentation is ideal for women who are looking to increase the size of the breasts, improve the overall shape of the breasts, or address asymmetry problems. Many patients question whether breast augmentation can improve the position of the breasts, or address sagging. To a certain extent, breast augmentation can address sagging. But this is only if that sagging is as a result of stretched skin. By filling in this stretched skin with implants, we can achieve some improvement. However, that is not the primary goal of breast augmentation; patients with significant sagging should consider a breast lift.

Breast Lift

Breast lift surgery is about improving the positon of the breasts, rather than increasing breast size. Sagging can be a big problem for women, especially after weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. As skin elasticity and muscle tone is lost, the breasts may begin to point downward. During a breast lift procedure, Dr. Pilcher can remove excess skin, manipulate breast tissues and muscles, and reposition the nipples. All of this serves to produce a perkier, and more youthful breast appearance.

Many women who come in for a breast lift are also interested in improving the shape of the breasts. By lifting the breasts and removing excess skin, Dr. Pilcher can improve the projection and shape of the breasts. However, patients should have realistic expectations for these results. If patients are looking for a significant increase in breast volume, they will not get that without the placement of breast implants.

Which Is Right for Me?

By considering the needs and wants of each patient, Dr. Pilcher can help to determine whether breast augmentation or breast lift is the most appropriate treatment. Women who are more concerned with the position of the breasts should probably opt for a lift, while those whose primary concern is breast size will be better suited for breast augmentation. Patients who wish to address sagging and add volume to the breasts may consider combining the two procedures. In this way, they can restore a youthful perkiness to the breasts while also significantly increasing bust size.
