The Side Effects of Dermal Filler Injections
By Sheryl Pilcher on July 21, 2017
While facial plastic surgery can work wonders, more and more people are turning to dermal fillers to look their youngest. Dermal fillers are a type of cosmetic injection that helps add volume to the injection site. Typically the dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid or collagen. When dermal fillers are used, they help fill in deep lines and wrinkles as well as pits and scars. In the process, the dermal fillers improve overall facial aesthetics, helping a person look younger and more refreshed.
Even though there's no downtime after getting a dermal filler, there are minor side effects to keep in mind. The team at our San Antonio cosmetic surgery center would like to cover the basics of dermal fillers and their side effects right now.
Some Popular Dermal Fillers
Some examples of dermal fillers include:
While the side effects for the dermal fillers can vary to a certain degree from filler to filler, the various side effects listed below are common to many fillers. The side effects listed should also give you a good idea of what to expect following a cosmetic injection treatment.
Redness of the Skin
It's not uncommon for a person's skin to be red or pinkish after a cosmetic injectable treatment. This flushed appearance is only temporary, however, and is not part of cosmetic results of the procedure.
Swelling of the Face
In addition to redness, many people experience mild swelling after they've undergone a cosmetic injection treatment. This swelling is normal and tends to last for only a few hours.
Tenderness of the Face
Some dermal fillers result in tenderness or sensitivity of the face, especially around the injection sites. Typically the tenderness does not last long. Patient should avoid touching or massaging their face after treatment.
Lumpiness or Unevenness
With some dermal fillers, patients notice that their face appears uneven or lumpy in the injection site. This may be disconcerting, but thankfully it's just a temporary side effect. Within a few hours or a day, a patient's facial appearance will have evened out.
Firmness Around Injection Sites
A person's body can react to a dermal filler in different ways. For instance, there may be a sensation of hardness or firmness in an injection site. This will fade soon, and patients are again asked to avoid touching or rubbing the injection site.
How Long Do Dermal Filler Side Effects Last?
A dermal filler side effect can last as little as a few hours and as much as a day or two. Patients will typically notice side effects abating steadily soon after treatment, however.
If you experience any side effects that persist or get worse after a few hours, it's important that you contact your cosmetic surgeon as soon as possible so the matter can be addressed.
Proper Planning Reduces Severity of Side Effects
In order to avoid complications and to ensure that side effects are not severe, we carefully plan treatments ahead of time during the consultation process. This allows us to avoid complications such as allergic reactions and potential contraindications with drugs a patient may be taking.
