Safety in Plastic Surgery: Avoiding Complications

By Sheryl Pilcher on April 20, 2018

Discussing plastic surgery with.a cosmetic surgeonMany patients who come to our San Antonio, TX plastic surgery center ask us about the safety of surgical procedures. This is a common concern to have, especially when body contouring surgeries can require up to a month off from work. Thankfully, plastic surgery is very safe, especially given how many procedures are performed on average each year. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) estimates that 1.8 million surgical procedures were performed in 2017. Each year on average, fewer than 1 percent of patients suffer from complications during their surgery or while they are recovering.

Even though cosmetic surgery is safe, we do want to consider some potential dangers and concerns that patient should note. We’ll then cover some of the common safety measures and innovations that help prevent complications from occurring.

Potential Risks to Consider

Even though the risks of complications from plastic surgery are very low, there are dangers that patients should always keep in mind.

  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Nerve damage
  • Excessive scarring
  • Seroma
  • Poor cosmetic results

Knowing the risks tends to make patient more attentive when it comes to post-op healing.

Improvements in Surgical Technique and Technology

Over time, improvements in surgical techniques and surgical technology have led to much safer plastic surgery procedures. Surgeons are always looking for more effective ways to help patients achieve their aesthetic goals without putting their wellness at risk.

Effective Non-Surgical Treatments Are Available

If the dangers of surgery itself are worrisome to you, there are plenty of non-surgical treatments available that can achieve results comparable to surgery. The ASPS records 15.7 million non-surgical cosmetic treatments in 2017. Dangers and side effects of these procedures are much less serious than surgery.

Picking the Right Plastic Surgeon

One way to ensure the safety of a plastic surgery procedure is to pick the right plastic surgeon. Be sure to research the surgeon, check their credentials, and look up patient reviews and testimonials. An experienced, well-regarded plastic surgeon means a lower risk of complications.

Follow Pre-Op Instructions

Patients are given pre-op instructions to prepare their body for surgery. You see, healing begins before the first incision is even made. By following these pre-op instructions closely, you are less like to experience severe side effects and complications.

Safety During the Surgical Procedure

During your surgery, we will exercise extreme caution, noting any issues that may emerge while the procedure is being performed. If general anesthesia is required, we’ll make sure to monitor your vitals so that you are not at risk.

Follow Post-Op Instructions

Post-op instructions are also vitally important to ensuring a safe surgery with proper healing. Follow these post-op instructions closely to ensure your side effects get better from day to day and that your body is recovering as it should be.

Attend All Follow-Up Visits

Following a surgical procedure, patients will have multiple follow-up visits with their plastic surgeon. These are done to monitor the recovery process and make sure patients are getting better. Attend all of these visits as scheduled.
