When it comes to body contouring at our San Antonio, TX practice, liposuction is one of the most common treatments. This procedure helps eliminate stubborn pockets of fat for a sleeker, smoother, more contoured appearance.
Today, our team at Accent Plastic Surgery will take a look at liposuction statistics, including demographics and how many procedures are performed.
A Brief Look at Liposuction
Liposuction can be performed under general or local anesthesia, based on the needs and preferences of the patient. Once you are comfortable, your surgeon creates several tiny incisions in the treatment area.
Next, a thin tube called a cannula is inserted through the incisions to break apart and suction away stubborn fat deposits. Once the desired result has been achieved, the incisions are closed with stitches.
In most cases, patients recover in a few weeks. However, the larger the treatment area, the longer the healing period will take.
Liposuction Statistics: How Many Procedures Are Performed?
In the year 2017, 17.5 million cosmetic procedures were completed in the United States alone, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Liposuction was the second most popular, just behind breast augmentation, with a total of 246,354 procedures performed. This was a five percent increase from 2016.
Demographics: Who Is Undergoing Liposuction?
Now that we know how many total liposuction procedures were performed last year, let’s take a look at demographics based on gender, age, and ethnicity. We will explore these in the sections below.
Historically, liposuction has been performed primarily on women. In 2017, approximately 218,000 women chose to undergo this procedure. However, the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons reports that men of all ages are beginning to take advantage of both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments.
Of the 246,354 liposuction procedures performed in 2017, 28,180 of them were completed on male patients. These accounted for 11 percent of all liposuction procedures performed in the United States last year.
Furthermore, this represents a five percent increase from the previous year.
Patients of all ages undergo liposuction. Take a look at these statistics. In 2017:
- 38,032 individuals aged 20 to 29 had liposuction
- 83,040 individuals aged 30 to 39 had liposuction
- 96,091 individuals aged 40 to 54 had liposuction
- 25,252 individuals aged 55 and over had liposuction
What about cosmetic surgery and ethnicity? In 2017:
- 77 percent of all liposuction procedures were performed on Caucasian patients
- 10 percent of all liposuction procedures were performed on Hispanic patients
- 8 percent of all liposuction procedures were performed on African-American patients
- 4 percent of all liposuction procedures were performed on Asian/Pacific Islander patients
Could Liposuction Be Right for You?
If you are considering aesthetic enhancement through body contouring, liposuction could be an option. The only way to confirm your candidacy is to schedule a consultation with an experienced cosmetic surgeon. He or she can help design a treatment plan according to your unique concerns.
