Treating Excess Skin vs. Excess Fat
By Sheryl Pilcher on January 16, 2019
Excess skin and excess fat are common in patients. Patients that wish to undergo body contouring treatment to shape and tone their figure should understand that these issues require different types of treatment.
At Accent Plastic Surgery in San Antonio, TX, Dr. Sheryl Pilcher can effectively remove excess skin and fat. At your consultation, we can discuss your treatment options, including whether treating excess skin vs. excess fat will help you achieve your cosmetic goals.
Treatment for Excess Skin
Skin tightening procedures address loose skin and support tissue to create a more lifted, proportional appearance after a patient experiences dramatic weight loss.
With weight changes and age, the skin loses elasticity, contributing to the appearance of sagging, excess skin. Even after underlying fat tissues have been reduced with diet and exercise, the excess skin remains on certain areas of the body, such as the arms, breasts, face, legs, and stomach.
Candidates for skin tightening procedures to address excess skin include patients with:
- Weight loss that has stabilized
- No current history of smoking or tobacco use
- No pre-existing conditions that may inhibit the healing process
- The ability to maintain long-term weight loss
Dr. Pilcher may recommend one or more of the following procedures to smooth out the skin:
- Arm lift
- Breast lift
- Tummy tuck
- Body lift (to treat the buttocks, outer thighs, waist, and hips)
- Medial thigh lift (to treat the inner thighs)
Though Dr. Pilcher has extensive experience in these procedures, there are always risks associated with skin tightening procedures.
These include bleeding, infection, skin tissue loss, excessive scarring, damage to nerve reception in the skin, deep vein thrombosis or blood clots, and fluid accumulation among other symptoms.
Dr. Pilcher will discuss these possible risks before treatment begins, but always discuss any concerns you may have about surgical results before the procedure.
Treating Excess Fat
Excess fat can be easier to treat than excess skin.
First, patients can minimize excess fat through a healthy diet and exercise routine. However, in many cases, patients still have certain areas of the body in which excess fat accumulates.
Liposuction can remove excess fat in specific areas of the body. During this procedure, small incisions are made in the treatment area. Then, a cannula is used to suction excess fat out of the body.
Liposuction is the most effective fat removal treatment available. While it does result in side effects and require a healing period, patients achieve excellent results from the procedure.
